Tokyo Neighborhood Histories

Tokyo did not grow as a single planned city. Its neighborhoods developed from villages, post towns, temple districts, merchant quarters, military sites, railway suburbs, factory zones and reclaimed waterfronts. Explore how each area changed over time, why it developed its distinctive character, and what remains visible today.

These articles focus on historical neighborhoods rather than station boundaries. One history may therefore cover several nearby stations, while a major station area may contain more than one historically distinct neighborhood.
